Being able to make money from home is a dream for me.

Not long ago, I wrote a post about running a successful blog when you work full time. You see, the thing is, that right now, I’m in too much debt to be able to quit my 9-5 and rely on my blog as my full source of income. Sure, I make some money from it but I have too many compulsory outgoings to take that risk right now.

So, for the time-being, I’m doing everything I can to make some extra money to enable me to pay off my debts quicker. I still want to have time to work on my blog so, for me, another “regular” job such as bar or retail work on a weekend, isn’t really what I was looking for. I wanted to find ways to make money from home.

Here are my favourite methods of making a bit of extra cash that aren’t boring!

6 Interesting Ways to Make Money from Home

1. Get Paid to Use Google

We all use Google on a daily basis. What if I told you that you could earn money for using Google? And, on top of that, you don’t need to do anything any different to your usual day-to-day activities?

You can make money from home just for searching the web using Qmee.

All you have to do is download the extension and then search online like you would usually on Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, Bing and Tesco.

Qmee works in the background and, where it feels it’s appropriate, will show extra results or adverts alongside the normal search results that you see.

How does it work? Well, companies pay Qmee to appear in those ads and Qmee gives you a cut of that money when you click on those links.

The additional results appear on the left of your screen and all you have to do is click on the results that interest you to earn cash. There’s no minimum payout level and the cash gets paid into your PayPal account.

An extra bonus? The results that Qmee shows you can also save you money by giving you access to thousands of automatic coupons and offers, as well as displaying prices savings where they find better deals for you!

Signing up is easy, all you have to do is go to the sign-up page, enter your email address and create a password, then download the extension. Then you’ll be ready to start making a little extra cash without having to do anything any different to your usual daily activities.

2. Swagbucks

This is my all time favourite way to make money from home. In fact, not just from home but anywhere!

Swagbucks is a site that offers you numerous ways to make money. Well, you actually earn points called SB and then you can exchange these for gift cards. You have the option of getting “cash” into your PayPal account or gift cards for retailers like Amazon, Walmart and M&S (and lots of others too).

The reason that Swagbucks is my favourite way of making a little extra cash is because of the variety of “tasks” that you can earn points from. Simply sign up and make a start on the “tasks” of your choice from the list below.

Earn Points for Shopping

There are two ways you can benefit from shopping with Swagbucks. Sometimes you can earn some SB points and other times you can benefit from a discount at an online store.

You can use the “Ways to Earn” menu from your Swagbucks dashboard to select “Shop” and scroll through the stores there or you can use the search bar to see if a particular store is on their list.

Alternatively (and this is how I do it), you can install the Swagbucks extension for Chrome and then, whenever you visit a site that you can get a discount at or earn SB point from, you will automatically be notified by a little drop-down bar.

I don’t personally use this method so I can’t vouch for how effective or lucrative it is in terms of points. But, you can install a Swagbucks search bar and use that whenever you are browsing the web to earn some extra points. The reason I don’t use this is that I use the Qmee extension (see above).

Watching Videos

You can earn points (between 1 and 3) for watching a series of videos. Whilst this doesn’t seem like an awful lot of points, I earn an average of 70 – 80 points per day by simply watching/playing the videos in the background whilst I work.

Playing Games

This is another element of Swagbucks that I haven’t really explored but I have taken a quick look. There are a number of different games, available on your laptop/desktop or your mobile device, that you can play to earn a few extra points. Great if you find yourself with a few minutes to spare.

The main source of “income” from people using Swagbucks (according to the forums) seems to be through surveys. I have completed a few and been pleasantly surprised by how short they are for the number of SB points received (around 70 each time).

I tend to check once a day to see if there are any surveys recommended for me but most of the time, I ignore them because once I’m sat at my laptop, I’m ready to work on my business and don’t want to get distracted!

This is a great way to earn large amounts of SB points. And the options are practically limitless! Okay, they’re probably not limitless but there’s a lot.

The “Discover” section of Swagbucks is something that you need to check regularly for new deals. An example of some of the deals that I have earned from include 1,200 SB points for signing up to NowTV (which I was planning to do anyway!), 600 SB points for joining the 30-day free trial of HayU (reality TV), 550 SB points for a free sample of coffee!

You need to be careful about reading the terms and conditions of each offer as sometimes you need to stay registered for longer than the free trial to earn the points. That’s fine if you want to be registered to that product or service anyway (like me with NowTV) but it’s pointless if you end up paying for something you don’t want just to earn a few points!

Inviting Friends

Another great way to earn some SB points is to refer friends by clicking the “Invite Friends” link at the top of your dashboard

I’ve earned £85 in under a year without dedicating any time to the more time-consuming tasks such as surveys. In fact, most of this has come from running videos in the background and using the “cashback” options when shopping online.

3. Listening to Music

If you’re looking for something a little more fun then this is the one for you!

Slicethepie pays people to listen to music and leave a short review of each track that you hear. They have also started offering reviews on clothing and other products but I tend to stick to reviewing music.

Your feedback on tracks, clothing and lots more goes directly to help artists, record labels and brands make decisions.

Your payment per review is based on your Star Rating and the quality of your review. You can earn more by submitting detailed, varied and constructive reviews in well-written English. The better your review, the bigger the bonus payment.

The most appealing part of Slicethepie for me is that I can earn money listening to music whilst I’m doing other things – blogging or just doing housework etc. – so it doesn’t really take up much of my time or take me away from other tasks that need to get done.

You can also earn some extra money by referring friends using your unique referral code.

4. Transcribing

Transcribing and captioning is the perfect way to make money from home for introverts!

Whilst this requires more time than numbers 1-3 in this list, it also pays a lot more. is a company that provides both transcribing services to companies that need it. It’s simple to sign up (although you will need about 30 mins to an hour to complete the typing assessment) and is open to complete beginners which is a great bonus that not many other services offer!

Once you’re registered, you can complete as much or as little work as you like so it’s completely flexible.

There are, of course, lots of other transcription services out there and lots of topics for you to transcribe which keeps it interesting!

5. Open an Online Store

We all know that you can make money from home by selling old stuff on eBay. But I’m not talking about that here. There’s only so much stuff you can get rid of!

If you want to be able to make money from home more often, and you’re creative, why not open your own Etsy store?

Products and services such as stock photo bundles and logos are always in high demand. And selling digital products and services means that there are no additional costs associated with postage and packaging.

I’ve recently started my own Etsy store selling digital prints and planners for bloggers and entrepreneurs. You can check it out here.
