Tell Us a Little Bit About Your Blog/Biz
I’m Sammy and I write about personal finance, blogging, early retirement and wellness on Well and Wealthy. I’m also using the blog to document my journey from quitting the 9 to 5 to making a living from blogging, building up my wealth, reaching financial independence and early retirement.
What Inspired You to Start Your Own Blog/Biz
Michelle from Making Sense of Cent’s income reports; I saw how much money she was making each month from running her own personal finance blog and how many people she was able to help and I just knew I wanted to do something similar. Previously I had worked in debt collection and found that I really loved helping people sort out their money. A personal finance blog seemed perfect!
What Were the First Steps Your Took to Put Your Dreams into Action?
I think I must have read every bloggers income report going to understand how the blogging business worked. I intended to build up my blog slowly as a side hustle, then I unexpectedly quit my 9 to 5 job after a serious period of depression and other health issues which meant I just couldn’t go into work. At that point, I knew I needed to make blogging work for me as it was a job I could do from home when I felt well enough that also centred on my strengths and had real progression. So I signed up to SiteGround and just kind of jumped!
What is the Biggest Challenge You’ve Faced so Far and How Did You Overcome it?
Getting traffic to my site has been most difficult. I have never studied or worked in marketing, which is a lot of what blogging comes down to so I have really had to educate myself from scratch.
I don’t think I’ve fully overcome this challenge yet but I’m definitely working on it. I’ve had just over 500 page views since my site has been live (1st June to 26th June 2017), which I’m okay with for my first month. Joining Pinterest groups has really helped as has promoting in Facebook groups.
What is Your Biggest Achievement to Date?
I had my first affiliate sale yesterday (25th June 2017) in my first month of blogging! It’s only £30 but it just does actually show that you can make money doing this and soon!
What is Your Favourite Thing About Running Your Own Blog/Biz?
The flexibility and actually doing something that helps others. The flexibility is great because I can make decisions when to work such as and when I’m most productive. I always felt that the 9 to 5 work environment was very controlling because I couldn’t work when and how I knew I was most productive and creative!
Actually being able to help others is also unbelievably satisfying. It’s just so wonderful to know that you are doing meaningful work that can only be of benefit to your customers/readers.
What Could You/Your Blog Your Business Not Function Without?
My trusty MacBook Air, I couldn’t imagine doing this much work on a computer or laptop that wasn’t fast and reliable!
What Keeps You Motivated and Focused When Things Get Tough?
A combination of previous wins, others bloggers income report, blog business insights and my boyfriend. Sometimes it really helps to go over your previous achievements and remember how impossible it felt before you had that win. It’s amazing how all of a sudden everything can change.
Seeing how other bloggers dealt with set backs and tough times and then seeing how far they have come since really helps too.
Plus my boyfriend pumps me up and has full faith in me that I can achieve my blogging goals. For me having that someone who believes in you can be a total game changer, whether they are your partner, friend, family or a coach.
What One Thing do You Wish You Had Known Before You Started Out?
That it really is possible to make money. Until you make your own, even if it’s only a couple of cents or pence you never quite believe that it’s possible. But once you know, I think it really boosts your confidence and convinces you to go for it!
What Does the Future Hold for Your Blog/Biz?
My goodness who knows! I hope a wonderful tribe of readers who I get to help every day and a good income so I can reach my financial independence goals!
I plan to bring out some budgeting products to really help people get a good hold of their finances. It would be amazing to do that!
Finally, Tell us One Random Thing About Yourself!
I love keeping chickens and growing vegetables, not the most standard hobby for someone in their twenties!
A huge thank you to Sammy for taking the time to share her story with us!
